What is cineXML?
cineXML translates Avid FilmScribe XML to Redcine XML and indexes the Red files.
Any Avid sequence prepared with RedRushes, Metacheater or RedcineXSLT can be exported. Use Redcine to render the used media as Quicktime for online in Media Composer or Symphony online. Or render to DPX for online in Avid DS, Smoke, Resolve or other professional tools.
Mac system requirements:
OSX 10.5 or later
REDCINE 3.1.8
FilmScribe 24.1
Windows system requirements:
Windows Vista 32 bit
REDCINE 3.1.8
FilmScribe 24.1
.NET Framework 3.5 SP1 [DOWNLOAD]
Step by step guide
1. FilmScribe Export
Finish the edit in Media Composer or Symphony.
- Launch Avid FilmScribe and open the sequence bin.
- Drag the sequence to the Sequences area in the Cut List tool.
- Choose video tracks.
The FilmScribe settings should be:
- Lists: Scan
- Global Options > Template: XML
- Separate List for Each Channel: Selected

Press the Preview button and save the FilmScribe XML to disk.
2. cineXML Export
Start cineXML.
- Browse for the Filmscribe XML you saved in FilmScribe.
- Add any root folder containing Red Media in the edited sequence.
- cineXML will automatically choose a folder and XML name for you in the same path as the FilmScribe XML. Change these if you want to export to a different location.
In the options window choose:
- The naming scheme for the Symlinks. (Feature coming soon)
- Handle length in frames.
- A limit for the amount of clips to import into Redcine (This will chop up a sequence with many edits into multiple Redcine XML files. The benefit is a snappier session in Redcine and the ability to render the footage on several computers at once. (Feature coming soon)
- For online in Avid there’s an option to export an ALE for the batch import process.
When you are satisfied with the options click OK and then export the files.
3. Redcine
Start Redcine
- Create a new project.
- Choose Load All… and select the directory containing the symlinks from the cineXML export.
- Choose Open… and select the XML file exported from cineXML.
Color correct the footage in Redcine to preserve the dynamic range and get the colors in the ballpark before the online session.
We recommend that the online is performed as High Definition with the following settings:
Project tab > Format Settings
- Format: HD 1080
- Aspect: 1:1 Square
- Framerate: The edited sequence framerate
- Colorspace: Camera RGB or RedSpace
- Gamma: REC 709 or RedSpace
Output tab > Format Settings
- Format: QuickTime
- Codec: DNxHD
- Filename Specifications (Mac): #F.mov
- Filename Specifications (Windows): #C.mov
- Process: Full or Standard
When all the settings are done, click GO! and wait.
4. Avid Online
Start Avid Media Composer or Avid Symphony.
- Import the ALE to a new bin.
- Highlight the clips and go to the Clip menu and choose Batch Import…
- Select all the clips, click Set File Location… and navigate to the folder containing the rendered quicktimes and choose the requested file. Click Open. Now all clips should have a path assigned to them. Set the Video resolution to the same format as the Quicktimes in Redcine. Click Import.
- When the import is finished, select the sequence and choose Relink…
Use these settings:
- Relink by: Source Timecode and Tape
- Relink Method: Highest Quality.
- Select Create new sequences
Choose any other settings you want to use and hit OK.
That’s it. You have now successfully onlined a Red Project using cineXML. Congratulations!
Known issues
Clip names with international characters will produce an error when transforming the XML.
FilmScribe outputs a MacRoman text encoded XML instead of an UTF-8 XML. A workaround is to open the XML as UTF-8 in a text editor like TextMate and resave before using cineXML.
AutoSynced clips doesn’t show up in the XML
This is a FilmScribe limitation in version 3.05. Upgrade to FilmScribe version 3.1 or later.
